Denver Roofing Professionals: 5 Tips For Choosing the Right Roofing Contractor for Your Home

September 27, 2017

Any type of roofing project is a job that should be taken seriously, as your roof is your home’s shield against the elements.

Here are five tips from your Denver roofing professionals on choosing the right contractor for your roofing project!

Go Local

Find a contractor that’s local within your community. You’ll want to use someone that has an established business and reputation so you can go back and see reviews of the work they’ve done in the past. Local contractors are more familiar with rules and regulations that need to be understood and know the local suppliers to get the best materials for the job.

Check For Licenses and Insurance

A proper contractor should have insurance for all of their employees, themselves, and subcontractors. They should also be able to provide a copy of their insurance for not only validation, but also for you to keep as a record. Insurance and workers comp is crucial if an employee ever injures themselves while working on your home. Typically, your state will require that your contractor has a license and insurance, but that doesn’t mean unlicensed ones will stop trying to get roofing work.

Quality Over Cost

If you go with a company, or contractor, that has a really low cost, turns out you won’t really get the quality that your roof needs. It’s important to never choose a company based on price alone. Having a cheap estimate is a warning sign that the company doesn’t have the proper insurance. It’s true that you get what you pay for, too. Having a cheap estimate or project essentially means you’ll end up spending more money over time to fix problems that could’ve been avoidable.

Beware of Post-Storm Workers

Have you ever noticed an influx of flyers and business cards on your door or mailbox once a bad storm has passed? Beware of these “storm chasers”. Most likely, they aren’t reputable and are really only searching for quick fix repairs. Always choose a roofing company from referrals. If you are approached by a storm chaser, don’t be pressured by their sometimes forceful tactics such as making you sign a letter of intent. Reputable contractors will never do this.

Get an Extensive Warranty

A proper roofing company will offer manufacturer warranties that include the coverage of the contractor's work. Look for a roofing company that can offer an extensive warranty that will cover their own workmanship. For example, if something is installed improperly, you won’t notice the damage until years later. By then the insurance certainly won’t cover the cost to fix it - you’d end up eating that bill. Always look for extensive warranties!
