July 12, 2017

Roof inspections should be done on an annual basis by your Denver roofing specialists, but checking your roof on your own each season is imperative for avoiding problems down the road. The summer season brings especially harsh conditions, such as high heat, damaging storms, rain, and heavy winds. By taking the time to perform an inspection yourself, you’ll ensure that your roof is ready to handle the summer storms and heavy rain, your roof is in good condition, and if not, you know it’s time to call The Roof Dr!

Do A Walk Around

One of the very first steps of your inspection is to do a walk around your house, looking at your roof. No need to get on your actual roof, just walk around with a pair of binoculars to spot things easier. One of the first things to look at are your shingles. Are they buckling in? Curling? Blistering? Or, are you noticing any missing or broken shingles? All of these problems can lead to water damage or worse if you don’t get them fixed right away. Another important thing to look for is moss. This signals that you have roof decay underneath your shingles. Be on the lookout for cracked caulk, rust spots on flashing and vent pipes.

Underside of Eaves

Now that you’ve checked your shingles, take time to walk around to check the underside of eaves. Often you’ll find debris gathering up, so be sure to clear that away. The main function of eaves is to keep water off of the walls of your house and create an overhang to ventilate your roof, so keeping them clear of debris and buildup is essential for them to properly function. Be careful when you’re checking the eaves, as this is a favorite spot for insects to build nests! Eaves might be a new term to many, so if you’re not sure what they are read up on what Is an eave and what does it do?

Loose and Clogged Gutters

The summer season calls for strong storms in the Denver area. This means that checking your gutters for looseness and clogs is essential for a lasting, fully functional roof. Storms can knock gutters out of their original alignment, so walk around your roof to tighten your gutters back into place. A gutter’s main function is to divert water away from the house. Having them tightened and properly aligned will prevent water damage to your house. After spring, so many leaves, twigs, and seeds fall into your gutters and downspouts. Grab a pair of work gloves and clean out any clogs or sprouts. To test if you’ve gotten all the clogs out, run water down the gutters to ensure that it flows properly without stops.
