Denver Roofing Spring Cleaning Checklist

February 15, 2017

Spring is right around the corner, so there’s no better time to do a little spring cleaning around your home. Start with arguably, one of the most important parts of your home, the roof! Check off each of these items on your Denver roofing spring cleaning checklist:

Get rid of mold and mildew.

Have you noticed a strange smell in or around your home? Check your roof for mold or mildew! After winter storms, ice dams can build up on roofs that are not properly insulated. As you move into spring, this accumulation of water can turn into—yep, you guessed it—mold and mildew. It’s important that you keep an eye out for these two fungi to prevent damage to your roof, but don’t try to remove it on your own. Instead, call a Denver roofing professional to let them know it’s there, and have the experts take care of it.

Clean gutters.

Gutters should be cleaned on a regular basis to avoid serious damage to your landscaping, foundation and home. But remember, safety should always be a top priority when cleaning the gutters. Be sure to grab a buddy before you begin to clean them so someone can help with holding the ladder steady. Then, remove any larger debris such as big branches, leaves or twigs. After any debris is cleaned out that could cause a clog in the spout, flush the gutters with a hose. Check the downspout when you’re done to make sure that you didn’t miss any debris. Otherwise, you could unintentionally clog your gutter. This is a simple, do-it-yourself project that will save you from having to make costly repairs to your Denver roofing down the road.

Trim trees.

The next step on your Denver roofing spring cleaning checklist is to trim any trees or branches hovering over your roof. Take a quick look around the outside of your home and see if there are any large branches that are getting a little too close for comfort to your roof. Some branches might have shifted during the high winds of winter and now pose a threat to your home. If these branches fall, they can seriously damage the shingles of your roof. However, even if they don’t fall, having them hang over your roof can promote the growth of mold, since the roof is in a damp, shaded area. Learn mold and dampness facts here.

Check for roof damage.

After a long, brutal season of hail and winter storms, it’s important to check for damage on your roof. As you go about your spring cleaning, look for any signs of damage including loose shingles, curling shingles or water damage inside the home. If you do spot a sign of damage, call a Denver roofing professional to come take a closer look.
